OIL & GAS HOSE LEADER

Introduction to Low Pressure Hose Drilling Technology

02 Mar 2021

The technology of low pressure hose drilling is the frontier drilling technology developed rapidly in foreign countries in recent years. It is regarded as a revolutionary new technology of oil and gas drilling method in the 21st century, which sets off a wave of safe new drilling method. It is a new way to improve oil and gas recovery by using drilling means and methods.

Low-pressure hose drilling technology has the characteristics of no joint, no diameter, large bending, dynamic sealing, high strength, high pressure, small volume and so on. The main equipment includes: coiled tubing unit, downhole tools and instruments, and circulating sand removal unit.

Coiled hose drilling technology provides a safe, advanced and effective technical means for horizontal drilling with short radius, large displacement and multi-lateral direction, as well as underbalanced drilling with small hole.

The main advantages of coiled tubing drilling technology over conventional drilling techniques are as follows: In redrilling (deepening or sidetracking) operations in old Wells, the coiled tubing can be operated through the tubing due to the small diameter of the coiled tubing, which eliminates the need to pull out existing production equipment in the old well, thus significantly reducing drilling costs while drilling.

Using coiled hose can safely perform underbalanced drilling operations, reducing mud losses and preventing formation damage. Continuous mud circulation during tripping reduces tripping time and operation cycle, improving tripping speed and safety. Coiled hose can be wirelined to improve signal transmission while drilling, enabling full logging while drilling, and facilitating closed-loop drilling. Less ground equipment, less debris waste, low noise, small amount of sewage overflow, reduce environmental pollution.

Quick drilling in soft formations (no nozzles) with minimal erosion of the formation and good log quality (continuous drilling, no nozzles).

The equipment has good mobility, easy installation and disassembly, time saving and high safety.

Because of the small footprint of the well site, coiled tubing drilling technology is suitable for operating in areas where surface conditions are limited.

Technically, LPT drilling is particularly suitable for slim-hole drilling, which facilitates the automation of the drilling process, reduces the need for equipment and manpower, and reduces operational costs.

According to foreign experience, coiled tubing can achieve 25% to 40% cost savings compared with conventional drilling or workover equipment. In areas with high rig relocation costs, coiled tubing can even reduce the cost of riderless through-tubing redrilling by more than 50% compared to conventional redrilling.
